Mustang Monthly- Internet Edition
November 2008
Those that have been on the Dallas
Mustangs for a while know what our team’s philosophy is. Those of you who are
new to the team might not. Regardless of which category you fall into, it is
always a good idea to remember why being a part of the Dallas Mustangs can be a
long and worthwhile experience. Much of that experience is driven by the
philosophy that the team embraces.
Our philosophy is simply this: to develop an enjoyable
and competitive program for each swimmer based on their skill, age, and
interest. We don’t believe in pushing the younger age groups, mentally or
physically. The focus at that age should be on technique and beginning to build
an endurance foundation that will continue to help the swimmer throughout his
or her swimming career. Pushing a child’s development too early or too quickly
can be detrimental to the athlete in the long run. United States Swimming
research shows the percentage of those athletes, who were ranked in the top 16
when they were younger, that were still ranked when they were in the 17-18 age
group. The percentages were:
11% of ranked 10 and under went on to be ranked as 17-18
year olds
16% of ranked 11-12’s went on to be ranked as 17-18 year
olds
33% of ranked 13-14’s went on to be ranked as 17-18 year
olds
51% of ranked 15-16’s went on to be ranked as 17-18 year
olds
This shows that early success does not necessarily
translate into long term success. Therefore, it’s important to be patient. Let
the body grow and develop, while working on correcting strokes and building an
aerobic base.
The older Dallas Mustang age groups are challenged and
are expected to contribute to the Dallas Mustangs’ continued national presence.
There is obviously a high level of commitment and sacrifice needed to
accomplish this lofty goal. We are also preparing those athletes to be
successful at the college level.
We expect all of our swimmers to treat others as they
would like to be treated and to take the lessons that they learn from our
program into every aspect of their lives.
And we expect all of our swimmers to support each other. A big reason
for the success of our program over the years is due to our team concept, which
really shows when it’s relay time!
Swimming is an incredible sport, with incredible people.
Thank you for being a part of our great program. GO MUSTANGS!!

COPS
11 & Over A Meet (October 4-5)
Fifty-Seven of our 11 & over
“A” Mustangs showed up at Loos for an early season test of their fitness
levels. We were 3rd out of
18 teams in the team race and our swimmers did a nice job of getting many best
times despite being in the water only a month after a month off. The meet went smoothly and was run well by
COPS despite a relatively large number of participants. Below is a list of those Mustangs who got
some hardware and scored points in the meet.
Great start to the Season Mustangs!

Chow (40), Mark Faubion (16), Hannah Ferrin (17), Erin Florence (13), Eric

COPS
Little Splashers Unclassified Meet (October 4-5)
Fifty of our 10 and under Mustangs
swam in this meet which was hosted by COPS on the same days that they held the
11 & over meet but at different session times. The meet ran well and we finished a strong 4th
place out of 17 teams and only one out of fifty Mustangs did not get at least
one best time! The early timing of this
meet was evident in some of our relay starts, turns, and finishes which
unfortunately (in a few cases) resulted in unwanted DQ’s! That is okay, since it gives us some specific
things to work on over the course of the Season to correct! Below is a list of those Mustangs who were
fortunate enough to score points in the meet.
Congratulations to all of our Mustangs for winning many heats and doing
some great racing!

LAC
BB Meet (October 10-12)
This BB level meet was held at the relatively new pool in
The Colony. Forty-Four of our Mustang
swimmers participated in the meet in which we finished an impressive 6th
place team only 1.5 points out of 5th! Only 2/40 Mustangs did not achieve at least
one best time! Awesome job Mustangs!
The following swimmers scored in
the meet in at least one event:

DM
Haunted Hat B/C Meet (Oct 18-19)
Our Co-Meet Directors Deva
Fontenot and Jan Miller did a great job of managing a large “Olympic year”
crowd at our annual Haunted Hat meet.
Despite the fact that it was a North Texas Division 2 only group of B/C
swimmers we still had over 500 meet participants and stayed at or ahead of the
timeline the entire meet! We also had
over 100 Mustang swimmers swimming their hearts out in a B/C meet which is the
most I can remember in the last 8 or 9 years!
Thanks so much to all of our
Mustang parents and volunteers. Whether
you worked announcing, hospitality, awards, safety, clerk of course, computers,
timing, selling psyche sheets, ready bench or officiating……..thanks for helping
the “pony gallop” at the meet! It was great to see many new Mustang parents
getting their feet wet and supporting which we all know is a great sport for
your kid to be involved in. Below is a list
of those Mustangs who scored points in either the B or C level divisions. Mustangs Rule!

ATAC/NTN A
Invitational (Oct 31 – Nov 2)
This Southlake meet was well
attended by our A Swimmers except on the first night of the meet
(Halloween). We had almost 80 swimmers
in the meet and finished 4th out of twenty teams despite many of our
top swimmers only attending one day or not at all. As a group we swam faster than the first A
meet back in early October but still didn’t set the world on fire due to a
heavy training load for most of the older kids.
Many of the 12 and under swimmers swam great with several knocking down
some TAGS cuts early in the season! We
did race well and won many close races so Coaches Mook, Doug, and Lia were
happy with the team’s efforts in the water.
Great job Mustangs! Those that
finished in the money are listed below.
Christopher Alkire (14), Allison
Arnold (16), Claire Brandt (14), Rebecca Brandt (9), Sean Bray (16), Ashley

Message from our Meet
Directors
We would like to express our thanks to the following Mustang
parents who helped make the Haunted Hat a huge success by stepping up to
volunteer. We appreciate all the new
parents who volunteered for the first time, as well as our veteran parents who
graciously worked and trained our new parents, even though most didn't have
swimmers in the meet.

Tuition Policy
The Dallas Mustangs is a competitive
year round age-group swimming program.
As such we strive to provide consistent quality coaching and workout
facilities. To achieve this goal we
establish pool rental contracts and salary commitments with our coaching staff
for a full 12-month period. The Dallas
Mustangs Swim Team is not, and was not designed to be a swim program where
swimmers drop in one month and out the next.
Flexibility has always been important to us. We try to work with each family on the team
and we will continue to do so.
Tuition
may be paid annually or monthly. Monthly
Tuition must be paid via electronic bank draft or credit card only. NO checks will be accepted at any pools or
through the mail. NO EXCEPTIONS. Annual tuition may be paid by check submitted
with your registration form.
·
Tuition is due from
September through July.
·
Leave of Absence (LOA) is available only for injury and
medical reasons.
·
There will be a
$10.00 per month discount for the second and subsequent swimmers in the same
family. The fourth swimmer is free.
·
If dues are paid
annually, there will be a $110.00 discount for the second swimmer and a $220.00
discount for the third swimmer. If there are more than 3 swimmers; the three
highest tuition rates will be billed and the 4th and subsequent
swimmers are free.
·
A swimmer
transferring from another team must be in good standing with their old team.
·
Tuition is due the
first of every month. There will be a $5.00 per family late fee after the 10th
of the month for non-zero balance accounts.
